  33. WHAT IS SERALINE SCREENSAVER (SSS)
  34. ----------------------------------

  36. Seraline Screensaver is a screensaver for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.
  37.  
  38. Seraline randomly combines an extensive range of graphic effects to produce
  39. its images. Some are fast, some slow. Many of the resulting images are
  40. strikingly beautiful, but some may not appeal. You can just let it run, and it
  41. will continue to change, or you can press 'c' to restart the graphics.  A huge
  42. variety of images are produced over time, so please try it for at least a few
  43. days.

  45. Supports 16 color VGA, 256 color SVGA, and 24-bit color.

  48. INSTALLATION
  49. ------------
  50.  
  51. Windows 3.1
  52.  
  53. 1. Copy the file seraline.scr into your windows directory, usually c:\windows.
  54.  
  55. 2. Run Control Panel from the Main group in Program Manager.
  56.  
  57. 3. Double click on the Desktop icon.
  58.  
  59. 4. In the Screen Saver Section, under Name, select Seraline.
  60.  
  61. 5. Press Test to run the screensaver.
  62.  
  63. 6. Press Setup to display registration and support details, and access
  64.    configuration options.
  65.

  67. Windows 95
  68.  
  69. 1. Copy the file seraline.scr into your windows\system directory, usually
  70.    c:\windows\system.
  71.  
  72. 2. Click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  73.  
  74. 3. Double click on the Display icon.
  75.  
  76. 4. Click on the Screensaver tab.
  77.  
  78. 5. In the Screen Saver list, select Seraline.
  79.  
  80. 6. Click Preview to run the screensaver.
  81.  
  82. 7. Press Setup to display registration and support details, and access
  83.    configuration options.

  86. SETUP OPTIONS
  87. -------------
  88.  
  89. Configuration options are available from the Control Panel/Desktop/Setup
  90. screen by pressing the Options button.
  91.  
  92. Available options:
  93.  
  94. HIDE MOUSE
  95.     Selecting this option means the mouse cursor will disappear while the
  96.     screensaver is running.
  97.  
  98.  
  99. TEXT MESSAGES
  100.     You can have your own messages periodically displayed by entering a
  101.     series of phrases, each separated by a semi-colon, such as "text=My
  102.     message;Second message;Third;fourth". The messages are displayed at
  103.     random, and not necessarily immediately or every run.
  104.  
  105. Note that for the unregistered version, the above options only apply to the
  106. very next run of SSS, and then they are cleared.
  107.  
  108. SPEED
  109.     1    Slow Mode - only the slower drawings are used, making it less
  110.      distracting if you are trying to work next to the computer.
  111.  
  112.     2    Normal speed - uses all drawings.
  113.  
  114.     3    Fast Mode - uses just the faster drawings,
  115.          making it more watchable.
  116.  
  117. SAFE MODE
  118.     Select this option if SSS occasionally crashes with a General
  119.     Protection Fault. When selected, SSS will avoid graphics which have
  120.     caused problems with some video drivers.
  121.  
  122.  
  123. PASSWORD PROTECTION
  124. -------------------
  125.     Password protection is only available for Windows 3.1, because under
  126.     Windows 95, Control+Alt+Delete allows SSS to be cancelled.
  127.  
  128.     Warning: the security of your machine is not guaranteed when using the SSS
  129.     password protection because due to the complexity of the screensaver and
  130.     different machine configurations, there is the possibility that SSS may
  131.     crash and leave your machine available.
  132.

  134. RUNTIME OPTIONS
  135. ---------------
  136.  
  137. While the screensaver is running, the following keys can be used:
  138.  
  139. 1,2,3    Selects the speed, as described above under Setup Options.
  140.  
  141. f    The current drawing will Finish. Useful if it appears to be stuck or you
  142.      want it to move on.  So you use it when you want Seraline to do something
  143.      else and you don't want it to wait until it's finished whatever it's
  144.      currently doing.
  145.  
  146. c    Similar purpose to the 'f' key. Seraline will be re-started,
  147.      and also the Colors being used are changed and the screen is cleared.
  148.  
  149. h,H  For users whose mouse doesn't disappear, possibly because some other
  150.      program has left the internal Windows mouse counter too high, pressing
  151.      'h' decrements the counter. When it reaches zero, the mouse disappears.
  152.      'H' increments it. (Registered version only)
  153.  
  154. k    Keeps running with the current colors, & avoids clearing the screen so
  155.      that the image builds on itself as much as possible. (Registered version
  156.      only)
  157.  
  158. o    Displays an order form, which can be printed (Unregistered version only).
  159.  
  160. p    Pressing p will cause Seraline pause at the end of the current
  161.      drawing,  and not continue until you press 'p' again. This is useful, for
  162.      example,if Seraline is drawing something slowly, and you would like to
  163.      see how it ends up, but you have to leave the room for a while. Or if you
  164.      would like the chance to copy it to the clipboard when it's finished
  165.      before it gets overwritten. It doesn't pause immediately, but at the end
  166.      of the current drawing. When you have finished with the paused screen,
  167.      press 'p' again to start Seraline off again. (Registered version only)
  168.

  170. Pressing the PrintScreen function key will copy the full screen to the
  171. clipboard, and you can then paste that into a paint program and save the
  172. image. You can then cut an area from the image and use it as a background on a
  173. Web page.
  174.  
  175. IMAGEVOTE (Registered Version Only)
  176. ---------
  177.  
  178. Press the following keys while SSS is running to bias SSS towards images you
  179. prefer:
  180.  
  181. F4   Press F4 to vote FOR an image you like.
  182.  
  183. F5   Press F5 to vote AGAINST an image you like.
  184.  
  185. Shift+F5 resets to the system defaults.
  186.  
  187. Voting is a gradual process - it provides a general guideline only to SSS,
  188. such as more or less text, faster or slower drawings. Colors are not included
  189. in the voting. SSS keeps track of the last few drawings done, and votes are
  190. allocated with the later drawings receiving (or losing) more votes.  So at
  191. times you may be voting for something you may at other times be voting
  192. against, but over time, it is expected that the items you prefer will become
  193. more prominent.

  195. So, for example, if you like fractals, when you see one, press F4, and
  196. Seraline will do fractals slightly more often. You would continue to vote for
  197. fractals when they appear so that they appear more & more often.  Similarly,
  198. F5 is used to reduce the frequency of the drawings which were used to produce
  199. the screen that is showing when you press F5.
  200.  
  201. DISPLAYING BITMAPS (Registered Version Only)
  202. ------------------
  203.  
  204. Bitmap files created with PaintBrush, or other paint programs, can be
  205. displayed periodically by SSS, and then they are merged and colored with
  206. the other graphics. For example, you can have your company logo or other
  207. advertising material displayed, or perhaps a multi-line name & address which
  208. is too long for the message-display option.
  209.  
  210. The Options screen contains a button which brings up a Bitmap entry screen,
  211. which lets you enter the name of a disk directory. Any bitmap files in that
  212. directory will be displayed at random. Only files with the extension ".bmp"
  213. are shown.
  214.  
  215. When running in 256 color mode, the bitmaps will be displayed using the colors
  216. SSS is using at the time, and may appear quite different to the original.  To
  217. display the bitmaps using their own colors, you must run in 32K, 64K or 16M
  218. color mode.

  220. The bitmap screen also has an option called "Show Often". This will cause
  221. SSS to use the bitmaps in every run.

  225. REGISTRATION & BENEFITS
  226. -----------------------
  227.  
  228. Seraline Screensaver is "try before you buy" software, and is provided with a
  229. free 14-day evaluation period.
  230.  
  231. When you register SSS, it will
  232.     * display its full range of graphics over time
  233.     * allow the use of run-time keystroke options listed above
  234.     * allow password protection (Windows 3.1 only)
  235.     * save your Setup Options, including your own text messages
  236.     * use ImageVote to bias SSS towards images you like
  237.     * allow you to display your own bitmaps, such as logos
  238.     * remove registration reminder messages...
  239.  
  240. The screensaver occasionally displays registration reminder messages like
  241. "Please register SSS".  On receipt of your registration fee, you will be
  242. mailed, faxed or emailed a code which will remove these messages. This
  243. registration code is entered into the Registration field on the Setup screen.

  245. Your support through registration is appreciated and will encourage the
  246. development of additional graphics, features and products.

  270. A printable order form in MS Write format is in the file order.wri. An order
  271. form can also be displayed and printed from the Control Panel Setup screen, or
  272. by pressing 'o' while SSS is running.

  276. Alternatively, you may register SSS on-line on Compuserve. After logging
  277. on to Compuserve, enter GO SWREG, and request ID 4667.

  279. In order to keep the cost of SSS low, diskettes are not mailed as part of
  280. the base registration.  The latest version is available on various on-line
  281. services as described below.

  283. These prices and conditions are valid until 31st January 1997 for this version,
  284. and are subject to change with future versions.

  286. If you have already paid a fee to others (eg disk or CD vendors) to obtain
  287. this evaluation copy, that fee was for their copying and distribution
  288. services, rather than a payment for continued use of the program, and the
  289. software author does not receive any part of that fee.

  292. CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS
  293. --------------------

  295. Credit card payments may be made using VISA, Mastercard, or Australian
  296. Bankcard. A printable order form in MS Write format is in the file order.wri,
  297. which can then be faxed or mailed to Seraline. An order form can also be
  298. printed from the Control Panel Setup screen, or by pressing 'o' while
  299. SSS is running.  The details required are Credit Card type, card number,
  300. card expiry date and your signature.  These details can be mailed, or faxed to
  301. Seraline in Australia +61-2-879-4481.
  302.  
  303. Note that credit cards are billed at exactly $19.95 Australian. For other
  304. currencies, the amount appearing on your card will depend on the foreign
  305. exchange rate at the time. For example, at rates current in January 1996, this
  306. converts to an amount between US$14 and US$15.
  307.  
  308. We support PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption for sending credit card
  309. details securely by email.  To receive our public key, send an email message
  310. to porum@ozemail.com.au with "send public key" as the subject. On receipt of
  311. our key, create a text message containing your name, credit card type (VISA,
  312. Mastercard, or Australian Bankcard), credit card number and expiry date. Use
  313. the separately available PGP software package to encrypt the message, and
  314. email it to porum@ozemail.com.au.

  317. TEMPORARY REGISTRATION
  318. ----------------------
  319.  
  320. Because there can be a delay in sending and processing mail registrations, a
  321. temporary code can be provided by email. When you have mailed your payment, you
  322. can also send an email message to porum@ozemail.com.au and a temporary code
  323. which expires will be emailed back to you. When your payment is received, a
  324. full registration code will be sent.

  327. LICENSE
  328. -------

  330. Seraline Screensaver is NOT a public domain program.  It is copyrighted by
  331. Seraline Pty Ltd.  This software and accompanying documentation are protected
  332. by Australian copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.
  333.  
  334. The registration fee will license Seraline Screensaver for use on any
  335. computers in your home, and on one computer at work on which you are the
  336. main user.
  337.  
  338. Seraline Pty Ltd grants you a limited license to use this software for
  339. evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed fourteen days.  If you continue
  340. using this software after the fourteen-day evaluation period, you MUST make a
  341. registration payment to Seraline Pty Ltd.
  342.  
  343. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile, disassemble,
  344. otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed program except as
  345. provided in this agreement.  Any such unauthorized use shall result in
  346. immediate and automatic termination of this license.

  348. Registered users will be licensed to use, free of charge, any version 3.nn of
  349. SSS, and they will be notified by email of any significant 3.nn updates.
  350. Registered users will also be advised by email when the major upgrade to
  351. version 4 becomes available.

  370. Please note that although SSS is released with no known defects that
  371. cause crashes, because of the extensive calculations and graphics and many
  372. permutations, it may still crash occasionally due to incompatibilities with
  373. video drivers.  You should use the evaluation period to check that SSS
  374. does not cause problems with your system. See KNOWN PROBLEMS below for some
  375. work-arounds. If it crashes each day, there may be an incompatibility,
  376. although this shouldn't cause any other problems apart from stopping the
  377. screensaver.  If it crashes Windows, stop running SSS.

  395. VERSION NUMBER EXPLANATION
  396. --------------------------
  397.  
  398. SSS's version number is in four parts: A.B.C.D
  399.  
  400. A    The major version number - changed for major upgrades. Notification is
  401.      sent by email to registered users.
  402.  
  403. B    Minor version number - changed when there have been significant
  404.      enhancements to the graphics. Email notification sent.
  405.  
  406. C    Minor changes to the graphics. Usually only uploaded to the Web page,
  407.      and no announcement is made.
  408.  
  409. D    Minor changes to the documentation.

  412.  
  413. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  414. --------------
  415.  
  416. Some video drivers seem to get a GP Fault when too much stretching or
  417. shrinking is applied to fonts or images. If you find you get several GP
  418. Faults, then try selecting Safe Mode on the Options screen under Control
  419. Panel/Desktop/Setup. If there are still GP Faults, try adding the line
  420. "fonts=no" to the Seraline Screensaver section in your c:\windows\control.ini,
  421. using Notepad.
  422.  
  423. There is a small chance that SSS may crash and leave you without a mouse
  424. until you restart Windows.  Crashes are unlikely, but there are a lot of
  425. permutations, and the Seraline Screensaver is not guaranteed to never crash.
  426. Should this be a problem, you can have the cursor always displayed by
  427. de-selecting "Hide Mouse Cursor" on the Options screen.

  429. Any screensaver as calculation-intensive as SSS may slow down other running
  430. tasks such as printing or faxes. If there is such a problem with printing, you
  431. can try increasing the priority of the printing by running Print Manager from
  432. the Main group in Program Manager, and selecting the menu Options/Background
  433. Printing, and select High priority.
